Why Good Negotiators Aren’t Born — They’re Regulated

24th August 2026

Most people think negotiation is about the right words. It isn’t. What actually determines

whether someone can ask for what they’re worth — a fee increase, a boundary, a fairer deal

— is what happens in their body the moment they try to speak up.

I see this constantly in my practice. Bright, capable people who freeze, over-apologise, or

fold the second there’s friction. It’s rarely a skills gap. It’s an old pattern: somewhere along

They learned that wanting something — or asking directly for it — wasn’t safe. That

belief gets wired in early, often long before adulthood, and it quietly runs the show in every

negotiation since: the salary conversation, the client fee, the disagreement with a partner,

the boundary with a parent.

Here’s the cost. Every time someone avoids a negotiation, or caves too quickly, the nervous

system logs it as confirmation: see, that was dangerous — better not try again. The pattern

reinforces itself. Meanwhile the person underprices themselves, over-gives, or lives with

terms they never actually agreed to — they just didn’t fight for anything different.

This is where clinical work and negotiation skills actually meet. You can’t script your way out

of a nervous system response. You have to work with it directly:

Find the pattern. Where did the belief that asking is dangerous or selfish get installed

— and whose voice is it, really?

Regulate the spike. Using Havening and related techniques, we can reduce the physiological charge that hits before or during a hard conversation, so you stay clear-

headed instead of collapsing into fight, flight, or freeze.

Reframe the meaning. NLP work shifts “asking for what I want” from threat to simple

competence — something you do, not something you survive.

Rehearse with real stakes. Like actor training, understanding a concept intellectually

and being able to do it under pressure are two different skills. We practise until your

The body knows it’s safe, not just your head.

The result isn’t a script. It’s the capacity to stay present and clear when something actually matters, and to walk away from more conversations with what you came for.

If you’re ready to stop under-asking and start negotiating from a settled place rather than a

reactive one, get in touch to talk about working together.
